Originally a visual artist specializing in fibre arts, David Secunda transformed into a performance artist. Inside giants masks or puppets David and co-performers sprung unexpectedly into the audience’s view. In 1978 at the International Sculpture Symposium, wearing giant sisal masks, they approached Harbourfront Theatre in a war canoe. This moment at the Sculpture Symposium inspired David to continue experimenting with woven, crocheted, or knotted masks and giant puppets for performance pieces. These physical theatre works were presented across Canada and internationally.
